How to Get More Vitamin D
You probably already know that our skin can produce vitamin D from sun exposure. If you’re not getting enough sun, you may not be getting enough vitamin D. In addition, the skin produces vitamin D less efficiently as we age. You can also get your daily dose of vitamin D through the foods you eat. Just beware – some foods are fortified with vitamin D, but most foods aren’t loaded up with vitamin D – in fact, far from it. So if you don’t have plenty of sun exposure, your best bet is to get enough daily vitamin D with a combined effort of vitamin D rich foods and supplementation. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children and adolescents to take 600 IU of vitamin D per day. For adults, a daily intake between 600 and 800 IU is recommended by Institute of Medicine.
